Inclusive Community Artist Residency

February 12, 2018 by Kelsey Savage

Are you an artist dedicated to working in and with community?

Do you have a variety of practices in your creative toolkit?

Are you ready to dive into a deep immersion in inclusive community living?

Community Arts Council of Vancouver and John Howard Society of the Lower Mainland are exploring creative practice within inclusive community with a new artist residency.

Our vision for this residency:

  • Using community arts to profile and build community within JHSLM’s Vancouver Community Services Office and Fraser Street Apartments, as well as the greater Kensington/Cedar Cottage neighbourhood.
  • Provide opportunities for our service users, residents, and staff to find new and creative ways to share stories. We aim to highlight the importance of relationships in our journey, and aspire to spark conversations in new ways that share the principles of inclusive living with our neighbours and our city.

The residency is embedded in a community living setting, and includes renting a subsidized, newly renovated, live/work studio apartment at $ 850/month for a year lease.

The artist will be paid a monthly stipend
, in exchange for residency activity that engages these varied and connected communities in  a variety of creative practices that could include workshops, classes, exhibition, performance, and other activities. The stipend starts at $ 500/ month for 20 hrs of work, increasing to $ 850/month for 34 hrs of work after 6 month review.

Residency is a 12-month engagement
, with possible renewal annually for up to 3 years total.

Passion and interest + fit with this community are key. Artists of all experience levels invited.

Please submit:

  1. Artist resume highlighting community arts practice
  2. One page proposal outlining initial ideas for possible residency activities

Proposals accepted through February 23, 2018 via email to info@cacv.ca.
