Making Art In The Downtown Eastside

March 16, 2013 by CACV Admin

I just finished writing this absolutely brilliant post – tried to add some images……………………..Gone!  Gone!  Lost in ………..Cyberspace.  Sometimes I miss the days of wine and roses, no, no, I mean the days of paper and cut and paste.  Even if some particular page was ripped and tossed one could always go scrabbling in the dustbin and,  painstakingly swearing all the while, glue the bits together.  This was before sticky tape – which shows you how old I am.  Who remembers Gestetners?

So, this, here, is the new but not improved post.

Every year the Downtown Eastside has a festival called Homeground – because this is our home ground.  Some more than others.  Even as a squatter on this land I still feel a sense of belonging in this community.

Every Friday, from 2 to 4 pm there is a Ladies Tea Party at Oppenheimer Clubhouse.  It is for self-identified women; there are a variety of teas, snacks, and always an art project, all optional.  Women sit around a table, talk, snack, drink tea, make art; just as we have for thousands and eons of years.  The facilitator of this event is Ali Lohan.

On the 22nd February 2013 the ladies of the tea party sat around and made buntings.  Using reclaimed scraps of fabric and plastic bags they strung together these beautiful decorations for the Homeground 2013 festival.  These decorations do not tear easily, can be stored away for years, cost nothing and allow for a upswelling of artistic creation.

I have been working on this for hours, literally hours.  So, the photo thing is just not happening.  Solution?  I will make a slide show, post it on Youtube, and request that you, please go there to view the lovely images.

Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh.

After working on trying to get my slide-show on Youtube ……………………….and trying…………………..and trying………………….Eureka!!!!!! Two clicks; one enter……………..Bingo! Viola! C’est magnificuqueueuee.  Or something like that.

Cheers,

Karenza
